Most common reason for sore throat and difficulty in breathing in kids are tonsil and adenoid infections.Kids are more prone to get because adenoid and tonsils as part of their immunity development.If infections are too frequent in nature or too severe,tonsil and adenoids get enlarged and cause breathing issues,ear infections,impact facial teeth growth.Other reasons for tonsil and adenoid enlargement are allergies.
Frequent tonsillitis not responding to course of antibiotics treatment warrants tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy surgery.Most of times children become well with antibiotic course.But few kids get frequent infection especially those who have allergies.Flu vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine decrease infection of incidence to some extent
Tonsillectomy surgery can be done with conventional technique,blunt dissection and applying snare(wire like instrument to cut tonsil tissue)to cut and remove tonsil.This is good technique,but can cause more bleeding.Another technique for tonsillectomy is Coblation assisted technique.This method employs radio frequency energy to ablate tonsil tissue at 70-80 degree temparature and limits the damage to surrounding healthy tissue at zero blood loss and less painful after surgery.
Most common complaints after surgery are painful swallowing.It’s temporary and can be easily relieved with pain killer medication.Bleeding can happen due to secondary infection,it is very rarely troublesome and needs readmission and blood tranfusion.
