Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is performed to relieve pain and pressure of Chronic Sinusitis by providing ventilation and to drain mucus/pus out of the sinus cavities. Fess is performed by introducing HOPKINS™ rod lense endoscope attached with HD camera into the nose and sinuses, and using various cutting instruments like Debriders, scissors, Lasers, Coblator etc. to remove extra Tissue and Bone which is causing obstruction.

Main indication for FESS is chronic Rhino-sinusitis not responding to medication, Recurrent acute bacterial Sinusitis.

Sinusitis may be caused by

  • Enlarged Turbinates
  • Polyps
  • Bacterial and fungal infections
  • Allergies.

Post Operative Instructions

  • Avoid Nose Blowing for 10days
  • Avoid weight lifting more than 5kgs
  • Avoid straining while passing stools
  • Avoid unnecessary movement over nose

Postoperative care
Nasal irrigation should be started as early as possible with saline nasal sprays 3-4 times daily, To avoid nose block, crusting inside nose. Antibiotics are advised to prevent Infection.

Is sinus surgery very painful?

Sinus surgery usually done under general anesthesia, that means you will completely put into sleep during surgery. After surgery sometimes surgeon will insert packing into nose, which should be removed next day after surgery. While removing pack from nose, one may feel little pain or discomfort.

When do I need sinus surgery?

When sinusitis becomes chronic, not responding to medical treatment like antibiotics, nasal steroids sprays, then one can opt for sinus surgery to improve quality of life.

Is sinusitis can be permanently cured?

Yes sinusitis can be permanently cured/controlled with surgery when it combined with medication. Patient needs to do regular nasal cleaning with saline nasal sprays after surgery and needs to take anti allergic medication.

During surgery, tissue or extra growth which obstructing sinus drainage pathways are removed and patency is established so mucus won’t be stagnated in sinus after surgery.

No Surgery will be done with endoscopes and high-definition cameras placing them into nose and no external incision is required.

How much times it takes from recovery?

Recovery depends on extent of surgery and severity of disease most of the times it usually takes from 5-15 days.
